
In The Event of Receiving a Package
With an Unknown Substance
- DO NOT attempt to clean up the material.
- DO NOT create a dust cloud with the material.
- If possible and safe to do so, gently cover the material. Attempt to cover only if it is dry powder (not liquid) and small enough (no larger than an envelope) so that covering it will not create a dust cloud.
- Ensure that people directly exposed to the substance by touch or inhalations remain where they are until cleared by authorities. Encourage these people not to come into contact with others.
- Prevent others from entering the area and, if you have been exposed to the material, wash your hands with soap and water.
- Call 911 immediately and provide:
- Building address
- Nearest known cross streets
- Location within building; i.e. floor and suite number
- Advise 911 Operator of victim(s) that have collapsed or are collapsing so that emergency personnel can judge the best way to enter the building
- Ensure that all non-essential personnel are kept safely away from spilled or exposed substances.
- Notify building management of the situation
- Follow instructions given by authorities and/or building management.
Hazardous Materials Spill Procedures
