If You Discover A Fire
- Get people out of immediate danger and close the door to the room or area.
- Activate the red alarm pull station.
- Call 911 with information on the fire condition, building address, nearest cross streets, floor and suite.
- Notify occupants in your area, then evacuate using the nearest safe exit.
Do not use the elevator. Doing so risks being trapped in it.
- Report to emergency personnel with detailed information about the fire. If no emergency personnel are available on your floor, report to the main entrance of the building, and advise building staff or Fire Department of details of fire.
- If you are on fire, Stop Drop Cover Face Roll. Do not run while on fire running fans the fire.
- If you see someone on fire, smother the fire by wrapping him or her in a heavy fabric; e.g., coat, rug, curtain. Do not let the person you are helping run while on fire.
- Follow the instructions of emergency personnel.
- Evacuate through the nearest safe exit if there are no emergency personnel nearby and no instructions have been given by the building management or Fire Department.
- Walk do not run. Shut doors behind you, proceed along corridors and down stairways in a quiet, orderly manner; do not push or jostle. lf you encounter heavy smoke, keep low (crawl), use walls as guides to the nearest exit. Use an alternate exit if an exit has heavy smoke concentrations.
- Once outside, move away from the building to avoid falling debris and to allow the Fire Department access.
- Proceed to assembly areas as directed by building staff or Fire Department.
- Do not go back into the building for any reason unless the Fire Department has given permission to do so.
If You Cannot Safely Reach an Exit
- Stay low to avoid breathing in smoke and toxic gases.
- Retreat into a closed office space.
- Close all doors and other openings.
- Close gaps around doors with clothing, soft material or paper, and wet these materials with non-flammable liquid (water, coffee, etc.)
- Call 911. Provide location and number of people trapped in the room, stay on the line if requested by the dispatcher.
- Inform building management of your situation.
- Make a large “HELP” sign including your suite and floor number, and hold it up to a window facing the street.
- Do not break windows as this will draw smoke and gas into the room.
- Stay calm, each partition and standard door provides a fire barrier.
