Safe Cover During High Winds or Extreme Weather Conditions
The best choice is to take shelter inside an exit stairwell. If that is not possible, take cover under a desk, sturdy table or piece of furniture and hold on securely. If no cover is available, crouch inside a closet or against a sturdy interior wall. Face out and bring up your knees and hands to protect your head and neck. Avoid light fixtures, bookshelves and windows.
Do not leave cover until the high winds or extreme weather conditions have subsided.
Proceed to the designated assembly area if directed by emergency personnel, and it is a safe place to go.
If you require assistance to evacuate, remain where you are and wait for assistance from emergency personnel. (Make sure co-workers are aware of your location and situation.)
If a fire occurs, activate the nearest fire alarm pull station; the system may still be functional. Follow the building’s fire evacuation procedures.
If qualified, render first aid.
Keep calm. Do not run outdoors. Watch for falling debris or electrical wires when leaving the building.
In the event of extreme high winds:
- Power down all electrical equipment.
- Move critical belongings away from windows and secure in an enclosed room.
- Get a portable AM/FM radio, if available, and turn to local news station to monitor conditions.
- Gather flashlights and emergency kits and distribute as needed.
- Follow the instructions of emergency personnel or building management.
- If required to leave your floor space, use the stairwells DO NOT USE THE ELEVATOR. If the power fails you will be stuck inside the elevator.
- Report missing or people left behind to the emergency personnel so they can relay information to building staff and authorities.
- Keep telephone conversations to a minimum.
